Reaching Out

REACHING OUT has been the hallmark of Methodism throughout history. It refers to our efforts to fulfill Christ’s commandments to “Go into all the world” spreading the Good News of the Gospel and minister to the hungry, the poor, the outcast, and the forgotten. Meet Mel Wilson, Coordinator of Lay Ministries and check out these opportunities for every member to participate in Reaching Out.

Community Meals

In cooperation with other Newton churches, FUMC hosts free community meals on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 until 6:15 during the months of September through May.

Spreading the Word

Sunday services are live-streamed [link] at 8:45 AM and broadcast the following Sunday at 11:00 AM on radio station KRLS FM 92.1.

Home Missions

On the first Sunday of each month, FUMC contributes particular items to the Salvation Army. Each church is asked for something different each month, according to the following schedule:

United Women in Faith

Part of the oldest women’s faith based organization in the world for over 150 years, United Women in Faith support mission projects to help women, children and youth worldwide. Click to learn more.

Ingathering

Our church has participated in the annual Ingathering of the Iowa Conference for many years. Members assemble Personal Dignity, Student, Feminine Hygiene and Layette kits.

Free Treasures

Twice a year (spring and fall) FUMC hosts a “garage sale” in the church basement. Unlike a typical garage sale, though, everything is FREE. Members and friends are invited to donate good used items for this event, and everyone is welcome to come and “shop.” Watch this space for the next scheduled Free Treasures Giveaway event.

Coats and Mittens

Church members bring gently unused coats to give to the needy during cold winter months. A Christmas tree is set up in the entryway, “decorated” with hats and mittens before and during the holidays. [
